For reasons I can’t quite understand I have always had a fascination for photography right back to the times I was allowed a shot of the family Box Brownie.Just like to-day’s all singing and all dancing cameras it was fully automatic. Press the shutter and that was he picture taken. When I grew up I had a variety of different cameras all fully manual, no extras whatsoever. Nowadays like most photographers it is all digital and just like the Box Brownie, look in the viewfinder and press the shutter button!
I soon joined a Camera Club (1958 – 55 years ago) and have been in and enjoyed the various Clubs in which I have been a member. I enjoy entering competitions because it gives an extra reason for going out and taking even more pictures. While for a good number of years I took mainly Landscapes with a fair degree of success but now I virtually take only a very few. Now I take pictures of anything at all which has an appeal with Sport, People and Nature top of the list.
I still enter a number of International and National Exhibitions mainly because it is a good guide as to whether I am keeping up a standard and also gives you an insight what the current quality and style of others pictures something I firmly believe you do not get in Club Competitions as you are competing against the same people all the time and the standard of judging frequently leaves a lot to be desired.
I have to date got almost 700 Acceptances in Exhibitions and lucky enough to have gained 5 Gold Medals and numerous other awards. My advice to members is that if they really want to improve their photography try and see what others are doing by looking at some of the many pictures on the Net and enter external Competitions. I have also Lectured and Judged at Clubs and Exhibitions for the past 20 odd years.
