3rd Club Competition  2018-19 – Judges: Doug Hamilton and Sue Hill

Doug Hamilton CPAGB and Sue Hill CPAGB first met at the Edinburgh Photographic Society (EPS), where they have now been members for nearly 40 years.
Doug’s early photographic interests began when he was in the RAF in a photographic
reconnaissance division, where he was first introduced to darkroom work, and counts a Canberra PR9 as his first serious camera!

Until joining the EPS Sue’s photography had been limited to holiday snaps, but she soon acquired a ‘proper’ SLR and in the early days they both specialised in monochrome landscape prints, with Doug also doing some studio work. Colour was generally ignored as the chemicals were hazardous and the excitement of seeing the image gradually appearing in the dish as if by magic was missing. They gained many acceptances in International Salons, as well as a handful of Edinburgh Medals in their own Salon.

Gradually, however, the rising standard of digital photography, especially monochrome printing, persuaded them to abandon film, and now they have also had success in that medium with acceptances and awards, and they both gained their CPAGBs in 2010. Their current work still comprises mainly landscape, but now also includes wildlife and more abstract subjects.

Sue and Doug are recognised SPF judges, and have been judging Club Competitions together for over 30 years. Doug was also responsible for organising the Edinburgh International Salon for 10 years, for which they also have had the privilege to be one of the selectors on two occasions.
