The WordPress Page Editor

The WordPress Block Editor (also known as Gutenberg) provides the facility to construct pages (or blog posts) from basic editing blocks.

PLEASE NOTE: This website consists of pages rather than (blog) posts. All of the newer pages in this website were constructed using the newer Block Editor rather than the WordPress Classic Editor.

Blocks provide layout and content. Some blocks provide layout, such as columns, for a whole page or a page section.  Content blocks hold text, single images, videos or  image galleries etc. Content blocks can be nested within layout blocks.

Many plugins have been added in this website  to extend the  functionality of the block editor

Editor Plugins

Advanced Editor Tools (formerly known as TinyMCE Advanced) provides a powerful and customisable word processor in the form of the ‘Classic Paragraph’ block. “This plugin will let you add, remove and arrange the buttons that are shown on the Visual Editor toolbar … There you can configure up to four rows of buttons including font sizes, font family, text and background colours, tables, etc.”

Free Block Libraries

The Gutenberg Blocks by Kadence, PublishPress Blocks, and Ultimate Gutenberg Addons Blocks  are three plugins that add a large range of editing blocks and so provide great versatility to the page creation process. The free versions have been added to this website.

The introductory video below stresses the uses of Kadence blocks. The pages on  this site are much simpler in design  than that shown in the video because they mostly consist of just one single column without rows.  

 

Short Codes Used by 3 Plugins

In this website 3 types of content are added  in a different way because they generate complex outputs that require their own control pages. These three plugins generate ‘Shortcodes’. These codes are simply pasted into ‘Shortcode’ blocks or the Classic Paragraph block.

The content types used on this website that require the use of the ‘Shortcode’ block are:

  • the slide shows created by the Smart Slider 3 plugin 
  • complex responsive tables (on the Committee and Who’s Who pages) formed with the TablePress plugin
  • the contact from, at the bottom of the ‘About’ page, using the Contact Form 7 plugin 

Important Note: These three plugins cannot be deleted without loosing content

This site uses the SmartSlider3 plugin (free version) plugin to generate highly customisable slide shows.

Contact Form 7 Plugin

The contact form on the ‘About’ Page was created  with Contact From 7 . The documentation for this plugin is at https://contactform7.com/docs/

TablePress Plugin.

This plugin was used to create the responsive tables on the Club Committee and Who’s Who pages.

The demo page at TablePress.org  gives a very good functional demonstration and screenshots of how this plugin functions.
